Millis Model Aircraft Club History
The Millis Model Aircraft Club (MMAC) was founded over 47 years ago by a small group of modelers led by Tom Kempf, becoming an official AMA chartered club soon afterwards. These gentlemen set out to achieve a simple task – to have a radio control model aircraft club with a field for its members to enjoy and promote R/C flying in the community…enhancing the hobby’s development and form a population of interested prospective members. Safety was a primary agenda, but founding members also hoped to form a social group to share experiences and nurture friendships.
It is quite evident that Tom and the other founding members fully succeeded in their goal. They would be proud that their example of hard work and dedication to the hobby has been passed down to several individuals who keep the MMAC going strong year after year.
MMAC presently consists of roughly 30 members, with the majority holding member cards for several years. Some of our early pilots are still very active and each season brings a new group of enthusiastic and talented individuals into the fold. Most of our pilots fly electric or traditional glow-powered models in the .40 – 1.20 engine size range. Electric aircraft have become much more common and are always welcome. Some members are passionate about scale warbirds or civilian planes while others like simpler sport models. We hold monthly meetings, several events throughout the season and offer comprehensive novice pilot instruction.
Our original flying site in Millis was abandoned in 2003 due to a development of homes on the adjacent property. This was tough as it was a wonderful location and our primary flying site for close to 25 years. We are fortunate that Bill Martin Airfield in Medfield, MA (near the former state hospital) was created as a back-up location for us many years ago as a joint effort between MMAC and the Charles River Radio Controllers. Since losing Millis, we have sharing the airspace quite successfully for many years…keeping our independence as a separate club, but cooperating to split cost and manpower to maintain the site. We’ve worked hard to make Medfield our home…grooming it to be an airfield for all to enjoy.
Club Membership
Individual adults may join MMAC for $50 per year with discounts for additional family members. We also offer junior memberships for those 18 years old and under. Your member card grants you access to the field, a newsletter subscription and the opportunity to participate in all club functions like our Fun Fly’s, Annual banquet or Winter Projects event
Each individual must maintain a membership in the Millis Model Aircraft Club as well as in The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), a national organization that provides liability insurance as well as a monthly magazine featuring all aspects of model aircraft.

Club Meetings
We hold our meetings on the last Tuesday of each month via ZOOM at 7:30 pm, (no meeting in December). During the darker months and non Covid-19 times they are held at the American Legion Hall on Curve Street in Millis, MA. Visitors are always welcome…so come on by and meet other folks, young and old, who share a passion for radio controlled model aircraft!
After the club business is complete, members often exhibit their latest creations or exchange ideas. We always end the evening with a raffle featuring several neat and useful prizes like fuel, building supplies, tools or books. You can even join the club at the meeting if you wish.
Note: The December meeting is a member lunch at a local restaurant. Winter Project Night replaces the regular meeting in April.

Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is composed of the four elected club officers determined by the membership on a yearly basis. Newly elected officers are announced at the October meeting with their terms commencing at the November meeting. We encourage yearly turnover of our officers to provide an opportunity for everyone to contribute and bring renewed energy and ideas to the administration of the club and its activities.
